A friend turned me onto toneshared.com the other day and I’ve been meaning to give it a little plug. Toneshared offers for download free mp3 ringtones created by eletronic musicians. There are actually a few on the site that I picked up, and some I do like quite a bit. My favorites are a few by Deru, Telefon Tel Aviv, Michael Fakesch, and Pole. I have to say, however, that there are quite a few totally useless (in my opinion) tones on the site. I’m not going to name names, but I think several of the artists missed the point that these were supposed to be ringtones, not soundtracks for minute long MTV2 television advertisements. If I want to hear a song by an artist, I’ll listen to their album, not a moderately annoying minute long ringtone. I totally appreciate the effort, and some of the artists totally nailed the concept, but as the site has limited download bandwidth, there should probably be a 250-300k limit on the file size of the tones (which would also nicely constrain length). On the upside, however, their is a rating system, so folks can at least have a little say in the ones they like best. Check it out - hopefully this won’t be the only site to do something like this.
